Things to see and do in Silkeborg

Gl. Skovridergaard is located on the outskirts of Denmark’s largest area of forest, just 2 km from the town centre. So there is plenty to see and do within walking distance of Gl. Skovridergaard:

The nature is a wonderful experience in itself – and right on the doorstep of Gl. Skovridergaard. There are lots of rambling and running trails in the forest and around the lakes. You can borrow a map in reception, and if you prefer to cycle, it is also possible to borrow bicycles at Gl. Skovridergaard.

500 m from Gl. Skovridergaard is one of Denmark’s cleanest lakes, Almind sø, where you will find two bathing beaches. These beaches are extremely popular on hot summer days.

On the way to Lake Almind Sø, you pass Vejlbo marsh, which is a former peat bog, where sheep graze today.

Museum Jorn houses the world famous Danish artist Asger Jorn’s collection as a permanent exhibition. In addition, the museum has changing exhibitions of world-class art. The museum is located a few minutes’ walk from Gl. Skovridergaard, and discount tickets are available in reception.

Museum Jorn is located by “Indelukket”, a recreational area where there is also a park, marina, open air theatre and crazy golf.

Art Centre Silkeborg Bad has a permanent exhibition about “Silkeborg i Kurtiden” (Silkeborg in the spa era) as well as several changing exhibitions. This museum is situated a brisk, 30-minute walk through the forest. Discount tickets are available in reception.

Hjejlen, the world’s oldest paddle steamer still in operation, and the other boats in the “Hjejle fleet” sail the Silkeborg lakes in the summer. Sail to Himmelbjerget from the cosy harbour in the town centre, for example, or from one of the nearby jetties in “Indelukket” or by AQUA.

Shopping in Silkeborg town centre with its array of fashion shops, cafés, galleries and working artists and craftsmen.

In Silkeborg, there are many galleries and working artists and craftsmen, including Galerie Moderne, which is one of the largest galleries in Scandinavia selling modern art.

Aqua Aquarium & Zoo is a mere 500 m from Gl. Skovridergaard. It is northern Europe’s largest freshwater aquarium, outdoor “water playground” and wildlife park housing a multitude of different Danish animals.

The area of forest around AQUA is a so-called “wet ground arboretum” featuring plants from all continents.
